LOOK BEYOND THE OUTSIDE
“God Sees the Heart”

TODAY’S VERSE
“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7b (NIV)

TODAY’S QUOTE

“When you see others the way God does, appearances become less important and compassion becomes greater.”

TODAY’S MESSAGE

It’s easy to make quick judgments based on what we see—what someone wears, how they speak, or how they carry themselves. But Scripture reminds us that God doesn’t judge by the surface. While people look at the outward appearance, God sees something deeper: the heart.

When Samuel was sent to anoint the next king of Israel, even he was impressed by appearances. But God corrected him. The one He had chosen wasn’t the strongest or the tallest—it was David, a young shepherd boy with a heart fully after God.

In a world obsessed with filters, labels, and looks, God calls us to see with spiritual eyes. To not dismiss people based on their background or outward image, but to ask: What does God see? What is this person carrying? How can I show them honor?

When we stop focusing on appearances, we start seeing potential. And more than that, we begin to treat others not by what they show us—but by the value God has placed on them.

TODAY’S CHALLENGE

Ask God to help you see someone this week not with your eyes, but with His. Choose to look beyond their appearance and treat them with dignity, compassion, and kindness.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Why do you think we often judge others by what we see on the outside

  2. What are some dangers of focusing too much on appearances

  3. How can you grow in seeing people the way God sees them

  4. Is there someone in your life right now you need to view with fresh eyes

TODAY’S PRAYER

Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve made quick judgments based on outward appearances. Help me to see others the way You see them—with love, value, and purpose. Change the way I look at people so that I can reflect Your heart, not just my opinions. Teach me to look beyond the surface and respond with grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
